Networking and Telecommunications Services at UMD OIT
I am looking for a student to work in the Networking and Telecommunications Services department within OIT here at UMCP.
The work will primarily consist of helping to write and maintain scripts related to the administration of the campus network. Our scripts are written mostly in Perl, however, C, Java, Python, and shell scripts are used occasionally. We use MySQL and Oracle databases, many of our scripts are web applications, and many of our scripts are dependent on an in-depth understanding of networks and network administration. There may also be some system administration work on FreeBSD and Debian (as well as the occasional Solaris, RedHat, or Windows server).Of course, experience is a plus. However, I am looking more for someone who is interested in this kind of stuff, has a strong desire to learn it, and would really enjoy the opportunity to learn about networks, network administration, web applications, scripting, etc through some real world experience. If you're self-motivated, learn best through experience, and feel like you would go a long way if only you had access to a large network, some servers, and a large collection of interesting projects to work on, then this is the job for you.
We are looking for students on an ongoing basis, so whether you are interested in a job right now, starting over winter break, starting in the spring, or even starting next summer, feel free to apply, and we will do our best to accomodate you. We are also rather flexible in terms of work hours - we understand that you are a student first and an employee second, so your work hours can be dynamic (within reason) to account for your school workload. Pay is generally between $7 and $8 per hour.
If you are interested, email me. Let me know what you are interested in, in terms of computers and networks. Tell me what kind of projects you work on in your spare time, what you would like to learn about *nix, scripting, networking, network administration, network security, etc, and how you plan to use this knowledge and experience in the future (what do you plan to do after college?). You should probably also send me a resume.
